About

A long time Washington DC native, Dr. Frank Ashburn, Jr. joined Eye Associates as a cataract surgeon with a subspecialty in glaucoma. This followed a short stint full time teaching in the medical school at Georgetown University.

He had received his undergraduate degree from Yale University and graduated Alpha Omega Alpha with the class award in surgery from Georgetown University Medical School. He completed his residency in Ophthalmology at Georgetown. He then did his fellowship in Glaucoma at Washington University, Barnes Hospital in St. Louis.

Dr. Ashburn has been actively involved in helping patients in underserved areas to receive eye care. He was the medical director of Friends of the Congressional Glaucoma Caucus Foundation, which screened up to 50,000 people a year throughout the USA with teams of doctors, technicians and students using mobile vans. Dr. Ashburn is a charter member of the American Glaucoma Society and served many years as the medical director of the International Eye Foundation. He has been involved in clinical studies of different glaucoma drugs and the treatment of dry eyes. He was an investigator in the OHTS and AGIS studies sponsored by the NIH.

He has been recognized by Washingtonian’s Top Doctors for many years and has been selected as one of the Best Doctors in America. Dr Ashburn keeps current with the latest techniques and technologies in the treatment of cataracts and glaucoma. Although he no longer performs surgeries, except for in office lasers, his consultations benefit patients who need information and understanding in these areas.

He and his wife reside in Washington DC. They have four grown children and many grandchildren. His son Stro is a member of Eye Associates.
