Dr. Shortell then obtained his undergraduate degree at the University of Hawaii at Manoa on the island of Oahu and graduated summa cum laude. After completing undergraduate training, he stayed on the island of Oahu to earn his medical degree at the University of Hawaii, John A Burns School of Medicine, where he also met his wife, Dr. Michele Saruwatari. Both Dr. Shortell & his wife graduated from medical school with Alpha Omega Alpha.
After graduating from medical school, Dr. Shortell slowly made his way across the continental US. Dr. Shortell first completed a Transitional year internship at the Intermountain Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. He then completed his ophthalmology residency at the Georgetown University Hospital & Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC where he served as chief resident his last year.
He then moved to Philadelphia to complete a glaucoma fellowship at the Wills Eye Hospital, where he trained extensively in glaucoma surgeries including but not limited to: the newest advances in minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (microinvasive stents, goniotomy, viscocanaloplasty), glaucoma filtering surgery (tube shunt, trabeculectomy), in-office laser procedures (selective laser trabeculoplasty, laser peripheral iridotomy) and laser glaucoma surgeries in the operating room (cyclophotocoagulation), complex revisional glaucoma surgery and much more.
Dr. Shortell has a strong interest in the complexities of clinical and surgical glaucoma. He has a particular interest in new advances in minimally invasive glaucoma procedures and improving surgical outcomes. Dr. Shortell also has a strong interest in improving outcomes in cataract surgery and training the future generation of eye surgeons at Georgetown University Hospital & Washington Hospital Center Ophthalmology Residency Program, where he acts as part-time faculty.
In his free time, he enjoys outdoor activities with his wife such as surfing, hiking, kayaking, playing with his dog and enjoying the diverse food scene in the DMV area (he is always open to new recommendations).
